Ground Engineering

Ward Ground Engineering use a number of developed ground anchor systems in variable ground conditions including retention systems, dams, hold-down rock anchors and design and construct sand anchors, soil nails and rock bolts.

Our Ground Anchor System provides a complete range of ground anchors up to 15,000kN capacity. The system has been used with great success on ground conditions as diverse as fragmented sandstone, compacted sands, stiff clays, marine mud and fractured shale. The basic principle of the anchor system is to carry the load from one element and to transfer it to a groundmass that can bear the distribution.

For versatility and economy, all anchors have been standardized for use with Ward Post Tensioning multistrand head anchorages. The addition of corrosion protection means that permanent anchors offer up to a 100-year life.

The Ground Anchors are available for applications ranging from simple singled strand stressing on temporary structures (up to 2 years) to monitorable cyclic stressing, and are suitable for precise measurement of anchor extensions and foundation settlement under load.

The System uses low-relaxation strand, while soil nails and dowels are manufactured from reinforcing steel bar. Anchor capacities depend on the shear strength and load transfer capacity of the soil. Sand, soil and weathered rock are less suitable and may require onsite testing.

The Ground Anchor range includes restressable, monitorable and non-restressable fully-grouted types. Monitoring permits movement of both the anchors and the structure to be checked after stressing.

Design and construction of site retention systems is our specialty, and includes:
