Ward widened the Great Western Highway towards the central median and utilised the existing chevron space on the westbound carriageway to provide an additional right turn lane to Church Street. The new lane configuration includes two dedicated right turn lanes, one through lane, and a shared through-left lane, allowing for the separation of through movement and right turn movement on the Great Western Highway eastbound approach.

Scope of Works//

  • Relocation of the existing median on the Great Western Highway, adjustments to existing drainage pits and provision of new drainage line along the alignment of the relocated median
  • Provision of dual right turns from the Church Street northbound approach to Parkes Street by widening to the west over a length of about 140m. Associated reconstruction of footpath to accommodate widening
  • Provision of a short-left turn lane (about 25m long) from Church Street northbound to Early Street
  • Adjustment of kerb and footpath width and provision of a pram ramp at the northeast corner of the intersection
  • Adjustment of the central median nose at the southern and western intersection approaches
  • Adjustments to traffic signal infrastructure to suit new lane configurations
  • Adjustment/relocation/protection of utilities along the western side of Church Street and the at the northeast corner of the intersection
  • Line marking to reflect additional lanes, revised lane allocations and the new crossing
